Your thoughtfulness gives me goosebumps!

Our first unit of study in reading is metacognition. We want the children to turn their reading focus from "figuring out the words" to figuring out the author's message. We have used strategies like "Stop and say something" (The students stop after every two-page spread to think about what the story was about.) and trying to figure out the author's "big idea". The big idea is a hidden "life lesson" the author is trying to share with his or her reader. As readers we have to be good detectives, using the clues the author has given us and our own life experiences to figure out the big idea.

Now that you have the background, I must share with you how very thoughtful and insightful your children can be. We are reading The BFG by Roald Dahl. Today we read about the BFG's wonderful, marvelous ears. After reading, I asked the children to think of what life lessons Roald was trying to give us. That is when they gave me goosebumps! Here are some quotes from our conversation.
  • "If you listen very carefully, you will learn amazing things."
  • "Everyone has dreams to follow"
  • "If you have a dream you should run after it until you catch it"
Wow! They are great thinkers!
