In an effort to continue to meet the individual needs of all students, Cedar Falls Elementary Schools have adopted a new spelling/phonics program entitled Word Journeys. This researched-based instruction will enable children to explore words and word patterns through student-centered lessons and activities.

You can read more about the program and how you can help to support your child by clicking on the Spelling-Word Study Link to the left. This week all students received their first set of words for word sorting. This list is NOT at the instructional level of your child. It will be quite easy for most students. We are using this list to learn the routines students will use through out the year. You can expect that each Monday your child will bring home a "refrigerator list" with the words we are studying this week. The pattern or feature which we are studying is also explained on this list for your convenience. Keep this list at home to study from. Please take the time to go through the list with your child. Have them explain how they are sorting words this week.

Students also have word cards in their CAMP notebook that should go back and forth between home and school each day. These are in the zipper pouch of the CAMP notebook. Have your child read the word to you, spell them orally, and then sort the words into piles based on the features being studied. I have attached the Word Cards and Refrigerator list if you need an extra copy.

You may also enjoy visiting the Spelling City site to practice spelling words on the computer this week. Click here for this weeks list. Try taking a practice test or playing a game.
