Today the nurses from the University of Iowa Burn Center presented a puppet show to remind us about staying safe and taking care of burns. One thing we found out was that many of us did not have an exit plan at our home in case of a fire. Others had a plan, but had never actually practiced getting out of our home safely. Tonight's homework - Draw a simple floor plan to show the two ways you will get out of your bedroom at night if there would a fire. We also learned that burns from hot food are one of the most common burns seen in children our age. We need to be very careful when taking hot food out of the microwave, or when eating an after school snack. Many kids our age are also burned by campfires. We learned that the coals are still very hot the next morning, even if there is no flame or smoke showing. If we do get a burn the best way to treat it is to rinse the burn with cool water. It was surprising to learn that ice can cause a worse burn: frost bite! We should always show a grown-up if we get burned so that they can decide if we need to see the doctor. A blister is natures band-aid. It keeps infection from getting to the burn, so we never pop a blister. Wow! The nurses sure were great. Thanks for helping us out. Remember tonight's spelling homework, too. Show your family your refrigerator list. Talk about the pattern we are studying this week. Have a family member quiz you over your new words. Spelling lists are attached below. |
