Much of our time during these first weeks together has been devoted to becoming a community of learners. We have done many activities that help to highlight who we want to be as we work together. I must say that your children are very kind and thoughtful. Not only do they know a lot about how to show respect and kindness to one another, they are able to choose their actions accordingly! You must be very proud of the thoughtful children you have. I know that I am! We have learned that everyone, even grownups, have some basic needs in order to be happy:
We also learned that some guidelines (rules, laws) are in place just for management purposes. For example, in the US we drive on the right side of the road. In other countries they drive on the left. We just needed to pick a side so that everyone was safe and happy. Our classroom guidelines help our classroom to run more smoothly. They are as follows:
Students who choose to follow classroom guidelines and build our classroom community by being kids of character are rewarded in many ways.
We work as a class to earn points and extra recess minutes, we have a sense of pride in ourselves, we get compliments from others. Students may also receive a positive note, a pat on the back, a thank you or a spontaneous reward. We have agreed that these rules are fair and we are fully capable of following them. We would never ever break a rule on purpose, or do anything to cause our wonderful parents and teachers to be disappointed. But sometimes, we may need more practice. Students who are having difficulty with the rules may need to practice the rule in question during recess time. If this does not help, the child may need more practice time at home. I am very certain that this would only happen on rare occasions! You would receive a note letting you know which rule we need to practice and how much time we have practiced at school should home practice time be necessary. |
